Simple advice for complicated times

Over the past several weeks, we’ve all seen a spike in content about how to better manage our work-from-home lives. Bloggers, podcasters, and journalists seem particularly preoccupied with video conferencing.

From “How to look your best on a webcam” (from the New York Times) to “13 etiquette tips for video conference calls” (from TechRepublic), are we really supposed to be worried about our on-screen appearance in the middle of a pandemic? Do working professionals actually need to be told to “call from a quiet place”?

Let’s keep it simple.

My son is in seventh grade, and plays in the middle school band. With his school closed and the band unable to practice, his band director set up Zoom calls so students can keep in touch and practice together. Below is the simple advice he gave them about using Zoom.

“Here are the rules:
1 – You must be seated in a chair!
2 – You must be wearing appropriate clothing! No PJs!
3 – All school rules apply!
4 – Be kind, patient and respectful.
5 – Be willing to share!”

No need to make it more complicated than this.
