It’s not too late to find that perfect holiday gift for the word nerd in your life, but what can you get the person who routinely quotes from “Eats Shoots and Leaves” and who argues with others whether they should use the serial comma?
Here are eight ideas.
Even better than the “Star Wars” action figures we played with as kids, you can have Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and Edgar Allen Poe sit down to tea. These action figures even come with accessories.
2. An iPad with the browser set to WordHippo
The website WordHippo can help anyone find the perfect word. Search categories include “rhymes with,” “opposite of,” “sentences with,” “adverb for” and “past tense of.” It’s one of my favorite websites.
3. “Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters” by Harold E. Meyer
For word lovers who are also writers, this book contains sample letters for “virtually every business and personal letter you’ll ever have to write.” I refer to this book when I have to write an awkward email and have no idea where to start.
The book has letters for telling someone a meeting is unnecessary, firing a babysitter, answering complaints about out-of-control meetings, and complaining about a barking dog. There are also samples letters offering congratulations, apologies, and condolences.
4. An “I’m silently correcting your grammar” mug, magnet, or t-shirt
For the word nerd on your list, these never get old.
5. “Schoolhouse Rock: Grammar Classroom Edition”
Who remembers “Conjunction Junction” and “Unpack Your Adjectives”? “Schoolhouse Rock” sparked the imaginations of many future word enthusiasts. This DVD contains just the grammar tunes, but you can also purchase all the “Schoolhouse Rock” tunes on a 30th anniversary edition DVD.
6-7. Fisher Space Age Pen and Aqua Notes Waterproof Notepad
Inspiration can come at any time. Whether in the shower or right before bed, help the word lover in your life capture his or her ideas. The Fisher pen can write at any angle, even upside down. Aqua Notes are designed for the shower and include a water-resistant pencil.
8. Scrabble 2-in-1 Message Board Edition
This is my favorite item on the list. This magnetic Scrabble set features a full-size game board, 100 tiles and four tile racks that can all be mounted on a wall. Players can play as time allows. (I’m buying one to hang in our workroom at the office.)
